Germany remains one of the most practical EU markets for international students and skilled professionals, but immigration content goes stale quickly. EU Blue Card Germany: what changed for 2026?
The official Make it in Germany EU Blue Card page lists a 2026 standard salary threshold of EUR 50,700 gross per year. For shortage occupations, recent graduates, and eligible IT specialists without a formal degree, the listed 2026 threshold is EUR 45,934.20 gross per year, with additional conditions such as Federal Employment Agency approval where required.
For applicants, the practical consequence is simple: your CV and cover letter need to make the salary logic easy for recruiters. Show the role family, seniority, technical skills, degree or equivalent experience, and any shortage-occupation fit in plain language.
Opportunity Card: when it helps
The Chancenkarte is useful when you want to look for a qualified job in Germany and do not yet have a signed offer. The official page states two routes: either a qualification recognized in Germany, or at least six points in the points system. For 2026, proof of livelihood is generally at least EUR 1,091 net per month via blocked account or a formal declaration of commitment.
Why students should start before graduation
DAAD's winter semester 2025/26 snapshot estimates around 420,000 international students and doctoral candidates at German universities, including around 99,000 first-year international students. That is a large talent pool competing for internships, working-student roles, thesis placements, and graduate jobs.
Start with a German-style one-page CV, a second English version, and a shortlist of roles that map to your degree and visa path. If you are applying for working-student roles, read our guide to working student applications.

- Use concrete project outcomes, tools, languages, and metrics instead of generic motivation.
